The Cranes are Flying - Mikheil Kalatozov
"The Cranes are Flying" is an important film in both Soviet and Georgian history. This film takes place during World War II, first in Moscow and later in the outskirts of Russia. It depicts the at-home and emotional sides of war. This film also shows the more traditional and ideal Soviet citizens against the less traditional and ideal Soviet citizens.
In 1939, the Soviet Union agreed to a non-aggression pact with Nazi Germany. This pact divided up Eastern Europe to Soviet and German control. In 1941 Hitler invaded Russia and broke the non-aggression pact. This resulted in a large number of initial casualties on the Soviet side. By the end of the war in 1945, the Soviets had lost huge amounts of human life to the war, more than any other country involved. Approximately 25 million military members and citizens died in the war effort.
